Very slowly, I am progressing with my Whitebook about health. The Whitebook is a concise overview over the most disturbing issues in health politics, such as: medication that has long been shown to be useless still being paid by the Government or health insurances. The challenge is not so much in finding examples. Just last week, the UK has started questioning codeine after studies showed that the drug is ineffective yet harmful, and at the same time addictive ("The Independent", 16 October 2010, Cover Story). This is only one more in a long line of drugs that turn out to be useless and harmful. The reaction to such studies is usually "Oh, now we know this drug we have been prescribing for decades is not only useless, it is also harmful, addictive and cost millions or billions. Good thing we now have a new drug we can prescribe that is still patented and twice as expensive". Do you see what's wrong with this? The scandal does not end the situation, it aggravates it.

The challenge with the Whitebook, besides finding the time to write it, is to make it so compelling that it cannot be refuted. It should contain only clear cut cases of insane health politics. If parts of it are shaky, the opposition will pick use them to illustrate that the whole thing is rubbish. Another challenge is to choose the most eye opening scandals, because there are so many. And finally, the goal of the Whitebook is to propose simple, workable solutions which are politically feasible. So, it may be a little while longer until I can give you that book that will open the eyes of anyone who is in his right mind. But it will come.

2. Syncrometer-Like Automatic Detection Techniques for Pathogens

Here is some new technology which looks very promising: detecting viruses with a laser in seconds.

Dr. Hulda Clark used a device called the Syncrometer which she developed from an earlier bio feedback device called the Dermatron. The advantage of electric detection is that it is much faster than chemical detection. Of course, bio feedback testing has been criticized for being "unscientific" -- but has been used and is still used by thousands of natural health practitioners to monitor the progress of their clients.

I believe that if such techniques are good enough and cheap enough to be widely used, they will open the door to finding out what is in us and around us and that will give us insights we cannot otherwise gain. This article hear claims that "frequency specific microcurrent treatment" is beneficial for fibromyalgia and cites that this has been shown in a number of clinical studies. Even though the article does not give any detailed specifications of the treatment, "frequency specific microcurrent treatment" is exactly what Dr. Clark did with her frequency generator.

4. Cancer is Caused by Modern Man, New Study Suggests

This is an interesting new study in the light of what Dr. Hulda Clark said. She says that a parasite and a solvent (isopropyl alcohol) together lay the foundation for cancer. Even though the whole picture is a lot more complex (as detailed in her later books), these remained the main parts of the puzzle. Even though Dr. Clark pointed out that the isopropyl alcohol can also come from Clostridium bacteria, which are present especially in the case of dental infections, she also said that isopropyl alcohol mostly comes into our lives through processed products. In her later books, Dr. Clark goes on to list many other toxins that play an important role in the causation of cancer.

Some readers over the years have commented that cancer has always existed, even long before civilization brought in so many heavy metals, solvents and other toxins. How could it then be that toxins play such an important role for cancer, if it is mainly our civilized lifestyle that surrounds us with all these trace toxins?

A new study of almost 1000 mummies came to the conclusion that cancer was not widespread at all back in the ancient days. Only for a handful of the inspected mummies, cancer was the cause of death, whereas now it accounts for one in three deaths. Even if adjusted to age, the incidence of cancer was much lower than what we are used to now. This clearly shows that cancer is a "civilization disease" -- caused by something that our modern civilization brings with it. 6. How Ghostwriters Write Articles Your Doctor Relies Upon

When you have an ailment and go to the doctor you expect that if he or she prescribes medicine for your treatment that the choice of medicine would be made based on proven results for your disease. But that is probably not the case.

Physicians may think so, and you may think so, but the fact is that the information physicians get — even from some publications that are purported to be peer-reviewed — is often just a product of Big Pharma’s marketing arm. This is because Big Pharma is using ghostwriters to draft articles for publications and getting top-flight physicians to sign on as the “author” even though all they do is read the articles and suggest changes.

This fact came to light in late 2008 when Congress began to take an interest, and then surfaced again in 2009. Ceviche (pure, combination, or mixed with fish and shellfish) Typically served with camote, or sweet potato.
Tiradito is a related dish which shows the influence of Japanese immigrants and sashimi techniques.
The chupe de camarones (shrimp cioppino) is one of the most popular dishes of Peruvian coastal cuisine. It is made from a thick freshwater shrimp (crayfish) stock soup, potatoes, milk and chili pepper.
Anticuchos are brochettes made from a beef heart marinated in a various Peruvian spices and grilled, often sided with boiled potatoes and corn.
Tamales: boiled corn with meat or cheese and wrapped in a banana leaf. They are similar to humitas, which consist of corn mixed with spices, sugar, onions, filled with pork and olives and finally wrapped in the leaves of corn husks.
Papa a la huancaína (Huancayo-style potatoes), a dish consisting of sliced boiled potatoes, served on a bed of lettuce with a slightly spicy cheese sauce with olives.
Papa rellena (stuffed potato): mashed potatoes stuffed with ground (minced) meat, eggs, olives and various spices and then deep fried.
Arroz tapado (covered rice): uses the same stuffing of papa rellena, but rather than used as a stuffing, it is accompanied by rice.

Sancochado: A hearty beef and vegetable broth which includes yuca (cassava) and potatoes.
Lomo saltado, sliced beef (if made from the tenderloin it is "lomo fino") stir fried with onion, tomato, soy sauce, vinegar, chili (aji) and served or mixed with French fried potatoes (aka "chips"), and accompanied with rice.
Arroz con pollo, or rice with chicken, is enjoyed for its rich-flavored rice combined with chicken.
Butifarras: a sandwich in a type of white bread roll and consisting of "Peruvian ham" with sliced onions, sliced chili peppers, lime, salt, pepper, and oil.
Papa rellena
Causa, in its basic form, is a mashed yellow potato dumpling mixed with key lime, onion, chili and oil.
Carapulcra is an appetizing stewed dish of pork and chicken, dried potatoes, red chilis, peanuts and cumin.
Empanadas (Meat turnovers) they are filled either with chicken, beef or cheese. They have a unique taste due to the addition of olives and sometimes hard boiled eggs and raisins.

Suspiro a la Limeña: The bottom layer is made of dulce de leche that has been enriched with egg yolks. The top layer consists of meringue made with port wine.

Pisco Sour: typical Peruvian cocktail made with a pisco (originally from Peru), lime and egg-white.
Chicha morada: alcohol-free drink of purple corn juice.

Ceviche (pure, combination, or mixed with fish and shellfish) Typically served with camote, or sweet potato.
Tiradito is a related dish which shows the influence of Japanese immigrants and sashimi techniques.
The chupe de camarones (shrimp cioppino) is one of the most popular dishes of Peruvian coastal cuisine. It is made from a thick freshwater shrimp (crayfish) stock soup, potatoes, milk and chili pepper.
Anticuchos are brochettes made from a beef heart marinated in a various Peruvian spices and grilled, often sided with boiled potatoes and corn.
Tamales: boiled corn with meat or cheese and wrapped in a banana leaf. They are similar to humitas, which consist of corn mixed with spices, sugar, onions, filled with pork and olives and finally wrapped in the leaves of corn husks.
Papa a la huancaína (Huancayo-style potatoes), a dish consisting of sliced boiled potatoes, served on a bed of lettuce with a slightly spicy cheese sauce with olives.
Papa rellena (stuffed potato): mashed potatoes stuffed with ground (minced) meat, eggs, olives and various spices and then deep fried.
Arroz tapado (covered rice): uses the same stuffing of papa rellena, but rather than used as a stuffing, it is accompanied by rice.
Pollo a la brasa (grilled chicken or roaster chicken): is one of the most consumed food in this country. It's basically a gutted chicken marinated in a marinade that includes various peruvian ingredients.
Sancochado: A hearty beef and vegetable broth which includes yuca (cassava) and potatoes.
Lomo saltado, sliced beef (if made from the tenderloin it is "lomo fino") stir fried with onion, tomato, soy sauce, vinegar, chili (aji) and served or mixed with French fried potatoes (aka "chips"), and accompanied with rice.
Arroz con pollo, or rice with chicken, is enjoyed for its rich-flavored rice combined with chicken.
Butifarras: a sandwich in a type of white bread roll and consisting of "Peruvian ham" with sliced onions, sliced chili peppers, lime, salt, pepper, and oil.

Causa, in its basic form, is a mashed yellow potato dumpling mixed with key lime, onion, chili and oil.
Carapulcra is an appetizing stewed dish of pork and chicken, dried potatoes, red chilis, peanuts and cumin.
Empanadas (Meat turnovers) they are filled either with chicken, beef or cheese. They have a unique taste due to the addition of olives and sometimes hard boiled eggs and raisins.
Ají de gallina (chili chicken) consists of thin strips of chicken served with a creamy yellow and spicy sauce, made with ají amarillo (yellow chilis), cheese, milk, bread, and walnuts.
Escabeche criollo (pickled fish): The escabeche dishes rely in the cooking on the heavy use of vinegar and onions together with other spices and chili.

1. Introductory Special: The New Zincrometer 2010

The Syncrometer was Dr. Hulda Clark's invention. It is a bio feedback testing unit, described in her books. Some users found it hard to keep the tip in the same place during the test because of the missing resistance that the slits provided. In the Zincrometer 2010, the tip of the probe is roughened. This keeps the probe in place during the test yet does not damage the skin even when you test for hours. Owners of the first version of the Zincrometer can buy this new probe tip separately for easier testing.

The entire unit is built into a handy carrying case. That way the unit is always protected and you have space to keep some testing utensils right in the case.

3. Ultra-low microcurrent in the management of diabetes mellitus, hypertension and chronic wounds

Because of Dr. Hulda Clark's Zapper, we are always interested in news about the effect of electricity on healing. This study here uses a device which works with DC current. The zapper also uses DC current, but pulsed DC current whereas here it is not pulsed. The study actually indicates that it is AC current with extremely low frequency, because the polarity is only changed once in 11.5 minutes, but in my world that is simply DC current, where you switch the electrodes every so often.

Anyway, it is a very small and preliminary study, but it suggests that this current might have an influence on wound healing. The many citations and explanations are also enlightening, for example, the possible antioxidant effect of small DC currents, which Dr. Clark has never mentioned for the Zapper. The researchers write:

"Oxidative stress plays a major role in the pathogenesis of both types of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases including hypertension. The low levels of antioxidants accompanied by raised levels of markers of free radical damage play a major role in delaying wound healing. Ultra-low microcurrent presumably has an antioxidant effect, and it was shown to accelerate wound healing. The purpose of the study is to investigate the efficacy of ultra-low microcurrent in the management of diabetes, hypertension and chronic wounds."

4. Calcium May Help Weight Loss

A randomized controlled trial (RCT) study recently showed that women who supplemented calcium gained less weight than the placebo group that did not supplement calcium. Unlike an earlier study suggested, this was also true for women who were not deficient in calcium. The average weight gain in the treatment group was about 2.5 times less than in the placebo group.

It is unclear why calcium intake has an effect on weight. It was hypothesized that people with calcium deficiencies would tend to eat more to make up for the deficiency. But a recent meta study suggested that the effect might be due to more fat being excreted by the bowels due to the calcium.

5. Movie About the Incredible Dr. Burzynski Story

Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski is an MD who developed a product for treatment of cancer called "antineoplastons". Antineoplastons, Dr. Burzynski reasons, trigger the body's immune response to fight cancer, or trigger apoptosis in cancer cells, which is the mechanism of programmed cell death.

After Burzynski produced first evidence that this treatment could benefit cancer patients, he was attacked by the medical establishment and reproached with "quackery". The Texas medical board attacked him on numerous occasions and the FDA tried to make the treatment illegal.

Finally, Burzynski von a major war against the FDA in court and is now conducting research with his antineoplastons, hopefully to prove their efficacy and finally be able to market a product against cancer that is not owned by a multinational pharmaceutical company and which, we hope, will really help cancer patients.

6. Natural Clinical Trials Center Operative

The Federal Trade Commission and the FDA require clinical evidence for ay claims made about nutritional products. But research is expensive, as I personally had to find out in the projects I have financed -- they take longer, and cost a lot more than one would have thought, and at the end you end up with only a small pebble in a large mosaic.

7. Powerful Pharmaceutical Rep Confession

We all know that pharmaceutical companies are not our friends in a sense that their goal is to cure the world and make us all happy. With exceptions, they will do one of two things:

The skew medical studies and sell products that are touted to work but at best are useless, in worse cases do harm (e.g., many antidepressants, chemotherapy treatments etc.)
The treatments are effective but don't cure, so they must be taken for life.
If a company's only goal is to make money (which holds true for most large companies and in many other fields of economy does not create a problem), then it is obvious to see that the most profitable client is the one who is very sick but does not die. 8. Five Out of Six New Prescription Drugs Don't Work, Doctor Claims

What is said in the above article is well illustrated by an article published in the most circulated British newspaper, the Telegraph, last month:

Large firms hyped-up patented medicines, spent vast amounts on getting doctors to prescribe them and underplayed serious side effects, said Prof Donald Light, a sociologist and professor of comparative health policy at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey, US.

When the "toxic side effects" of prescription drugs were taken into account, and their misuse, he claimed they were "a significant cause of death".

Cholesterol-lowering statins were a classic example of the drugs industry overselling a product as a wonder-pill to prevent heart attacks, despite evidence that they could do more harm than good, he claimed.

But Prof Light, who has also written articles for the British Medical Journal and the Lancet, said data from independent reviewers suggested that five out of six (85 per cent) of new drugs provided few, if any, new benefits.

I had so much to write about this time that I almost turned this into two e-zines, but then I figured the information was important enough to send it to you right away and let you pick what you want to read.

First, I am proud to present two new or upgraded units. Developing an upgrade or a new unit is usually 12 months' work and so it is always a happy moment when it can be launched and we feel that something useful has been accomplished.

Then, you find a couple of interesting pharma critical items below; but also a lot of good news. I always try to focus more on the positive side of what's happening in our world of holistic medicine, and luckily there is usually plenty to talk about.

1. Introductory Special: The New Zincrometer 2010

The Syncrometer was Dr. Hulda Clark's invention. It is a bio feedback testing unit, described in her books. All her work is based on the Syncrometer, and she would sometimes compare it to the telescope that Galileo used to find out the world was not flat. The unit we have been selling for some 5 years now, we called the „Zincrometer“, a name suggested by Dr. Clark's son to differentiate it as a trade mark. Before she passed on, Dr. Clark had a few wishes for the improvement of our Zincrometer unit.

The new Zincrometer 2010 has the same circuit that Dr. Clark describes in her books, and the same as the previous units. The changes made to it as suggested by Dr. Hulda Clark:

The testing plates are of equal size and on the same level, which makes it easier to maneuver with the test substances and test plates.
The original Syncrometer used a test probe tip that was slit cross-wise. The edges of the slits could be painful when the unit was used for a prolonged period of time. Our first Zincrometer used a non-slitted probe tip.
Some users found it hard to keep the tip in the same place during the test because of the missing resistance that the slits provided. In the Zincrometer 2010, the tip of the probe is roughened. This keeps the probe in place during the test yet does not damage the skin even when you test for hours. Owners of the first version of the Zincrometer can buy this new probe tip separately for easier testing.

The entire unit is built into a handy carrying case. That way the unit is always protected and you have space to keep some testing utensils right in the case.
The unit has a built in rechargeable battery and comes with a two year warranty.

3. Ultra-low microcurrent in the management of diabetes mellitus, hypertension and chronic wounds

Because of Dr. Hulda Clark's Zapper, we are always interested in news about the effect of electricity on healing. This study here uses a device which works with DC current. The zapper also uses DC current, but pulsed DC current whereas here it is not pulsed. The study actually indicates that it is AC current with extremely low frequency, because the polarity is only changed once in 11.5 minutes, but in my world that is simply DC current, where you switch the electrodes every so often.

Anyway, it is a very small and preliminary study, but it suggests that this current might have an influence on wound healing. The many citations and explanations are also enlightening, for example, the possible antioxidant effect of small DC currents, which Dr. Clark has never mentioned for the Zapper. The researchers write:

"Oxidative stress plays a major role in the pathogenesis of both types of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases including hypertension. The low levels of antioxidants accompanied by raised levels of markers of free radical damage play a major role in delaying wound healing. Ultra-low microcurrent presumably has an antioxidant effect, and it was shown to accelerate wound healing. The purpose of the study is to investigate the efficacy of ultra-low microcurrent in the management of diabetes, hypertension and chronic wounds."

4. Calcium May Help Weight Loss

A randomized controlled trial (RCT) study recently showed that women who supplemented calcium gained less weight than the placebo group that did not supplement calcium. Unlike an earlier study suggested, this was also true for women who were not deficient in calcium. The average weight gain in the treatment group was about 2.5 times less than in the placebo group.

It is unclear why calcium intake has an effect on weight. It was hypothesized that people with calcium deficiencies would tend to eat more to make up for the deficiency. But a recent meta study suggested that the effect might be due to more fat being excreted by the bowels due to the calcium.

5. Movie About the Incredible Dr. Burzynski Story

Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski is an MD who developed a product for treatment of cancer called "antineoplastons". Antineoplastons, Dr. Burzynski reasons, trigger the body's immune response to fight cancer, or trigger apoptosis in cancer cells, which is the mechanism of programmed cell death.

After Burzynski produced first evidence that this treatment could benefit cancer patients, he was attacked by the medical establishment and reproached with "quackery". The Texas medical board attacked him on numerous occasions and the FDA tried to make the treatment illegal.

Finally, Burzynski von a major war against the FDA in court and is now conducting research with his antineoplastons, hopefully to prove their efficacy and finally be able to market a product against cancer that is not owned by a multinational pharmaceutical company and which, we hope, will really help cancer patients.

6. Natural Clinical Trials Center Operative

The Federal Trade Commission and the FDA require clinical evidence for ay claims made about nutritional products. But research is expensive, as I personally had to find out in the projects I have financed -- they take longer, and cost a lot more than one would have thought, and at the end you end up with only a small pebble in a large mosaic.

Dr. Rima Laibow, a long time fighter for Health Freedom, and Ralph Fucetola, attorney for the alternative medicine community ("The Vitamin Lawyer") and some others have now founded the Natural Solutions Center in Panama, which offers comparably low cost clinical trials of efficacy of nutritional interventions. 7. Powerful Pharmaceutical Rep Confession

We all know that pharmaceutical companies are not our friends in a sense that their goal is to cure the world and make us all happy. With exceptions, they will do one of two things:

The skew medical studies and sell products that are touted to work but at best are useless, in worse cases do harm (e.g., many antidepressants, chemotherapy treatments etc.)
The treatments are effective but don't cure, so they must be taken for life.
If a company's only goal is to make money (which holds true for most large companies and in many other fields of economy does not create a problem), then it is obvious to see that the most profitable client is the one who is very sick but does not die. So he must not be cured, but he must be at least well enough to go on living.

8. Five Out of Six New Prescription Drugs Don't Work, Doctor Claims

What is said in the above article is well illustrated by an article published in the most circulated British newspaper, the Telegraph, last month:

Large firms hyped-up patented medicines, spent vast amounts on getting doctors to prescribe them and underplayed serious side effects, said Prof Donald Light, a sociologist and professor of comparative health policy at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey, US.

When the "toxic side effects" of prescription drugs were taken into account, and their misuse, he claimed they were "a significant cause of death".

Cholesterol-lowering statins were a classic example of the drugs industry overselling a product as a wonder-pill to prevent heart attacks, despite evidence that they could do more harm than good, he claimed.

But Prof Light, who has also written articles for the British Medical Journal and the Lancet, said data from independent reviewers suggested that five out of six (85 per cent) of new drugs provided few, if any, new benefits.

9. Saliva Testing

We understand that not everyone has a naturopath or doctor close to them who is experienced at bio feedback testing such as with Dr. Hulda Clark's Syncrometer. However, Dr. Clark writes: "To have such a test, it is not necessary to be physically present. A saliva sample is sufficient. Not only can your saliva be tested, but you can also test your drinking water, body-care products, house dust, and the saliva of your pet."
